Marble and marble-quarrying has been of great importance to the community of Fauske and still is a primary industries.

From Fauske, inside the Skjerstadfjord, and north to Sørfolda is a 15 km  wide neck of land where you will find Norway's most
important layer of dolomite, marble and limestone. The first quarry was opend in 1884 and some of the quarries are still in operation. 

In Leivset, about 5 km south of Fauske town, they quarry another unique marble named Koloritt.
